Victor Ang | This journey has been fifty years in the making. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1975, Singapore and South Korea have grown closer not only through government and business ties, but through the people-to-people exchanges that arts and culture uniquely foster. As Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong noted during his visit to Seoul in November 2025, "many Singaporeans are passionate fans of Korean culture" — inspired by K-music, K-films, and K-dramas. Korean food has become a staple in everyday Singaporean life, just as Singapore's kaya and chilli crab have found their way into Korean hearts and kitchens.
What makes this cultural relationship historically significant is that it mirrors the broader story of both nations — two countries that chose to invest in their people, creativity, and identity on the world stage. Both Singapore and South Korea have demonstrated that culture is not a luxury, but a cornerstone of national resilience and soft power. Through sustained cultural cooperation over the decades, we have been showcasing each country's distinct creative heritage and deepening mutual appreciation both at home and abroad. That shared commitment is what gives this fifty-year relationship its enduring meaning.

Victor Ang | APE CAMP was an energising experience. What struck us most was how quickly participants from different disciplines — Artists, Producers, and Engineers — found common ground through the creative mission statements, which set the right conditions for genuine collaboration to flourish.
Unsurprisingly, the human connections became the heart of the experience. We were heartened to see Singaporean participants engaging with their counterparts well beyond official Camp hours, reaffirming the rich potential of cross-cultural creative exchange that encourages genuine dialogue and innovative thinking. That, to us, is the clearest signal that APE CAMP is a platform worth nurturing and growing together for years to come.

Victor Ang | Building on the strong foundations of Singapore's diverse and vibrant arts community, technology has become an increasingly significant force within our maturing arts scene. It has influenced artistic practice, audience engagement, and how the sector operates and sustains itself. Developments such as COVID-19 and the rise of generative artificial intelligence have accelerated the sector's pivot towards digitalisation and experimentation, opening up new possibilities for how art is made and experienced.
Technology and Innovation is therefore a key pillar of Singapore's current five-year masterplan for the arts, Our SG Arts Plan, underpinning NAC's vision of making Singapore a creative city that inspires. We see technology as an enabler that opens up new opportunities for the arts to grow audiences' experiences.
Our role as an enabler is to provide holistic support to the ecosystem — helping artists and arts organisations build capabilities, forge connections, and access new opportunities to grow a digitally confident arts and culture sector. By supporting the exploration and adoption of technology, we also facilitate collaborations between the arts and technology sectors, and invest in sector-wide infrastructure that strengthens the foundation for long-term innovation.
At the heart of this effort is a commitment to foster a dedicated environment where emerging and established practitioners alike can learn, experiment, and expand their horizons — to create and present engaging works for audiences.

Victor Ang | Building on each country's unique arts ecosystem and priorities, Korea and Singapore both support a collaborative approach in exploring the intersections of arts and technology. For Korea, this could mean exploring innovation within the creative industries and experimentation across varying scales; and for Singapore, through grants and cross-sector partnerships, for artists to expand their networks and practice to create works that resonate with diverse audiences. Beyond approaches, what is most valuable are the exchanges between both artistic communities that provide more chances for knowledge sharing and present exciting new opportunities.

Q5. APE CAMP

Victor Ang | There is much to discover and experience and we warmly welcome Korean creators working at the convergence of arts and technology to experience Singapore's vibrant arts scene firsthand.
Singapore Art Week, held every January, is our premier visual arts season. In recent years it has seen significant growth in media and digital art, and has served as a platform for international collaboration with Korean partners — most notably Hyundai, through the VH Award media exhibition. For those drawn to the intersection of technology and urban experience, the Singapore Night Festival in August transforms our heritage districts with large-scale projection mapping, kinetic laser installations, and interactive sculptures that invite audiences to become co-creators.
On the museum front, the Singapore Art Museum champions contemporary artists from Singapore and Southeast Asia, many of whom work with digital systems, kinetic art, and new media. The ArtScience Museum has also established itself as a landmark destination for arts-and-technology experiences, home to long-running immersive exhibitions by the likes of teamLab. We believe these platforms offer rich ground for exchange, inspiration, and future collaboration and we hope to welcome our Korean counterparts here soon.

Victor Ang | Both Singapore and South Korea have been investing in their creative and cultural industries, and there is much we can learn from each other's policy frameworks: how Korea built its cultural export ecosystem, and how Singapore has cultivated a multicultural creative identity that speaks to diverse global audiences. Moving beyond one-off exchanges, we hope to sustain a structured collaboration — joint residencies, co-produced works, and shared platforms that allow artists from both countries to develop creative relationships over time.
Korea has been a valued collaborator for Singapore, and APE CAMP is a testament to what we can achieve when both sides commit meaningfully to a shared vision. Partnerships continue to be central to NAC's strategy, and we believe the most impactful work happens not in isolation, but through deep, trust-based relationships with like-minded organisations. Our strategic partnership reflects a shared conviction that countries can, and must, work together and we look forward to continuing and deepening our partnership with ARKO and the broader Korean arts ecosystem in the years ahead.
